Plot Summary:
“One Year” is the story of a man named Sam. Sam is interviewing for a job with the Vexicon Corporation. Throughout the interview, Sam refers back to his past relationship in school with his teacher, Mrs. Carroll.
His story reveals events in which Mrs. Carroll looks out for Sam and changes him into a productive student. Other people involved in Sam’s story are Mrs. Russell (a burnt-out teacher), Mr. Hanson (the social worker), and Mr. Weeks (the principal).
A side story of Mrs. Russell shows how a good teacher became a pessimist and how salvation may be in her future.
Mrs. Carroll is put to the test as Sam’s life spirals out of control. She goes above and beyond the call of duty to “save this child”. With every attempt to help Sam, his situation gets worse. Who will help Sam survive his horrible home life?
As the interview progresses, Sam gives a few corporate “big wigs” a lesson on the reality of growing up in tough circumstances and beating the odds to survive. This story shows the importance of good teachers and the students’ lives they impact, as well as good children, and the teacher’s lives they impact.
